Marquette – The Marquette Regional History Center will present “Discovering the Ancient Caribou Hunters of Marquette County’s Silver Lake” on Wednesday March 22 at 7 p.m. at the Center on Spring Street in Marquette.
The program will be presented by Jim Paquette. 12,000 years ago on the shoreline of Silver Lake a herd of migrating caribou stopped for a drink, and ancient hunters using wooden spears with stone tips suddenly appeared. This presentation will focus on the results of the Silver Lake Reservoir archaeological survey project that Jim Paquette undertook starting back in 1987-88, and again, continuing during 2002 through 2008 when low water levels in the basin allowed for additional surface reconnaissance along the exposed shoreline of the original lake.
On display at the program will be an extensive collection of rare ancient stone spear points and tools that were left behind by Ice Age and early Holocene hunter/gatherers who once camped and lived on the shores of Marquette County’s Silver Lake.
