Marquette – Film fans are invited to a free screening of the modern classic film “Awakenings” on Thursday, September 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.
Robin Williams stars as the fictionalized American neurologist, Malcolm Sayer who discovered the beneficial effects of the drug L-Dopa in 1969. Administered to patients who survived the 1917-29 epidemic of encephalitis and were existing in a catatonic state, the medication awakened the patients decades later only to learn how to deal with a new life in a new era.
Based on the 1973 memoir of British neurologist Oliver Sacks, this three time Oscar nominated biographical drama costars Robert DeNiro and Julie Kavner. The film is rated PG-13 and runs for 120 minutes. Light refreshments will be served.
