Marquette – The Building Hope in Uncertain Times series will offer a screening of the documentary film, “Pete Seeger: The Power of Song” on Monday, March 21 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.
This Emmy Award winning documentary contains interviews, archival footage and home movies to illustrate the life of one of the greatest American singer/songwriters of the last century. Pete Seeger helped spearhead the American folk music revival as part of the singing group, The Weavers. His best known songs include “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” “Turn, Turn, Turn” and “If I Had A Hammer.”
Devoting his life to using music as a force for social change, Seeger went from the top of the pop charts to the top of the blacklist during the McCarthy era and was banned from American commercial television for more than 17 years until the Smothers Brothers broke the boycott. He went on to win four Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996.
Interviews with musicians Bob Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, Joan Baez, Bonnie Raitt, Bruce Springsteen, Natalie Maines, and Peter, Paul and Mary examine Seeger’s lasting influence on American music. The film runs for 90 minutes and is rated PG.
There is no admission charge. For more information, call 226-4318 or visit www.pwpl.info.
