Marquette, Michigan – An upcoming Black History Month presentation at Northern Michigan University will address “Race and Class in America: Why What Impacts African Americans Impacts All Americans.” Carter Wilson, head of NMU’s political science department, will give the talk from 5-6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, in 2904 West Science Building. The public is invited.
Wilson will use his book, Metaracism: Explaining the Persistence of Racial Inequality,” to reflect on Black History Month. His book explores how law, politics and history contribute to the progress and repression of race relations. Wilson contends that a new form of racism—metaracism—has emerged and “energized a reactionary political culture.” He explains how it adds to the widening gap in income, education and wealth.
