November is National Family Caregivers Month, and the VA understands the difficulties of being a Caregiver. If you’re caring for a Veteran who suffers from serious physical or psychological injury received in the line of duty, the VA’s Caregiver Support Program is designed to help.
Jerri Dementer of Rapid River, Michigan, is one of 18 Caregivers in the U.P. and Northern Wisconsin receiving emotional and financial support, which are a part of the new VA services offered to Caregivers of Veterans injured on or after September 11th, 2001. Caregiver Support has made a difference in Jerri’s life, whose husband, Alan, sustained injuries from a mortar attack while serving as a Marine in Iraq. She says she now has a support system at the VA.
Services this program offers for the Caregiver include: Caregiver training, monthly stipend, travel expenses, health care, counseling, and in-home and respite care. Caregivers of Veterans of other eras are also eligible for the same benefits except for monthly stipends and health care.
Veterans and their Caregivers interested in this program should visit www.caregiver.va.gov or call 1-800-215-8262, extension 32506.
