(Marquette, MI) – In honor of May as Mental Health month, the Peter White Public Library hosts a noontime drop-in Lunch & Learn session on “Trauma Informed Care” on Thursday, May 21 at 12:00pm in the library’s Community Room. This will be the final program for the Your Mind Matters series this month.
Staff members from Great Lakes Recovery Centers Youth facility will describe how they base their system of care on having a thorough understanding of how vulnerable trauma survivors feel. Traditional service approaches for adults may not recognize trauma triggers and re-traumatize adolescents. Everyone who comes into contact with youth entering into treatment needs to be trained in trauma-informed care to meet the goal of providing a safe and welcoming environment so client recovery is optimized. Youth need to have a voice in their treatment and providers need to listen. By creating limits and structure and showing care and concern, a safe environment is provided for youth to learn to trust and heal in their own time.
This Lunch & Learn presentation is part of Your Mind Matters, a community dialog on mental health issues sponsored by a coalition of community groups and the Peter White Public Library. There is no admission charge. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch or buy from the library café.
