MARQUETTE, Mich.—The Great Yooper Folk Dance on Saturday, Jan. 25, will kick off the inaugural Cabin Fever Days sponsored by the Beaumier Upper Peninsula Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University. The dance will feature local traditional music group All Strings Considered and local caller Marge Sklar leading a contra dance at 7:30, followed by the legendary Finnish reggae sounds of Conga Se Menne at 9 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students/kids.
All Strings Considered evolved out of the Hiawatha Music Co-op Old-Time Acoustic Jam that began in Marquette in 2007 and continues once each month. The band has a primary focus on traditional old-time instrumental and vocal music of the Appalachian region with a bit of Celtic and Scandinavian tossed into the mix from time to time. Most of Conga Se Menne’s music tells of good times and an appreciation for the finer, intangible aspects of living life on their own terms and not taking themselves too seriously. While the message is light-hearted and entertaining, the musical competence of the band members cannot be disputed.
Cabin Fever Days will run Jan. 25-March 22. It is designed to encourage U.P. residents to get out and enjoy a series of events celebrating U.P. culture during the winter months. It is funded in part by a Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs Arts Minigrant administered through the Central Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Regional Commission.
