Disabled Veterans Get More Time to Apply for Property Tax Exemption

LANSING – Disabled veterans across the state got an early Christmas present this week, announced Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency Director Jeff Barnes. The Michigan State Tax Commission determined on Monday that individuals who are eligible for the recently expanded disabled veterans’ property tax exemption can now file for that exemption in July 2014 if they missed the December 2013 deadline in their communities.

“Our office has fielded phone calls and emails from veterans across the state who were afraid they were going to miss out on this for 2013,” Barnes said. “I’m very happy to be able to deliver this great news to them – that they will be able to apply in July 2014 for the 2013 credit.”

Public Act 161 of 2013 provides totally disabled military veterans an exemption from property taxes on their primary residence and extends that exemption to a disabled veteran’s spouse, if the veteran dies before the tax break is granted. Previously, a veteran could qualify for a property tax exemption only if he or she was receiving assistance for specially adapted housing.

P.A. 161 was enacted in mid-November, and many veterans did not learn about it in time to take advantage of it for 2013. Now they have another chance.

To apply for the exemption, the disabled veteran, their unremarried surviving spouse or their legal designee must annually file an affidavit with their local unit of government.
