Westwood Shakespeare Company to Present Othello in January

Ishpeming— The Westwood Shakespeare Company will present Othello Jan. 8 at 7 p.m., Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. and January 16 at 7 p.m. in the Westwood Auditorium. Tickets are available at the door $7 for adults, $5 for students, with children under 10 admitted free. Parental discretion is advised as some scenes have mature subject matter.

“The kids have been working hard on this project all semester,” said B.G. Bradley, WSC director. “Even though we do this every year it’s always a challenge, because it’s Shakespeare and we always have newcomers in our cast and audience.”

Members of the company range in age from 14 to 18 and are all students at Westwood High School.

Bradley said the language and the large number of soliloquies in addition to the stage combat have made Othello an especially difficult challenge. “But the kids are up to it and are learning a great deal, and I think everyone will enjoy the show. The Shakespearean masterpiece concerns the themes of jealousy, racism, the nature of evil, politics, and women’s rights among other subjects.
The company will also present As You Like It, a Shakespearean comedy in April.
