Father Marquette and the 17th Century Thursday July 18th

Marquette, Michigan – The program “Father Marquette and the 17th Century” will begin with a discussion by Jon Magnuson about the Jesuits who explored the upper Great Lakes. You will learn when and why they were here, how did they travel and what were the details of Father Marquette’s journeys. Jim Paquette will then share the 17th century archaeological discoveries in Marquette County and what they may tell us about the people who lived here. There will be examples of early maps, navigational tools and artifacts to examine.

While we may never know if Father Marquette ever visited the shore of our city, his explorations and those of the other early explorers have left a lasting legacy. The program will start at 7:00 p.m. at the Marquette Regional History Center. There is a $5 suggested donation. Please call 906-226-3571 or visit www.marquettehistory.org for more info on this event and others.
