Presented by: James R. Paquette It was back on May 23, 1996 that archaeologist/historianJim Paquette from Negaunee chanced upon the discovery of four mid-17th century French brass finger rings at a remote site in central Marquette County. This small trove of 350 year old brass trinkets provided researchers with the region’s first documented archaeological evidence of early contact between indigenous peoples living in the Marquette area and early French explorers, fur traders, and Jesuit “black robe” missionaries of New France.
