Michigan Farmers Union Supports ‘Farmers First Act’ to Address Farm Stress
MICHIGAN – The Farmers First Act of 2023, introduced earlier this week by Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Joni Ernst (R-IA), addresses the mental health crisis in farming and rural communities, and Michigan Farmers Union stands in full support behind the legislation. The Farmers First Act reauthorizes the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network (FRSAN), a one-of-a-kind program that connects farmers and their families to stress assistance resources, and increases program funding levels. In response, Bob Thompson, president of the Michigan Farmers Union, made the following statement:
“Across Michigan, the rapid closure of farms and the unpredictability across markets has left farmers in a precarious position, not just economically, but emotionally and mentally. Farming is a serious career that has its fair share of challenges, and ensuring that farmers have the support that’s needed in their communities to access mental health services is of utmost importance for thriving local agriculture. We thank our own Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) for cosponsoring this legislation and urge Congress to work together to pass FRSAN to support our farmers and rural communities.”
