Recognizing the organization’s dedication to wetlands and waterfowl issues, the Department of Natural Resources honored the Michigan Duck Hunters Association (MDHA) with a DNR Partners in Conservation Award at last Thursday’s (Jan. 10) regular monthly meeting of the Natural Resources Commission in Lansing.
In presenting the award to MDHA President Marc Curtis, DNR Director Keith Creagh gave special mention of the organization’s:
- Administration of the state’s Waterfowl Stamp Program since 1998;
- Hosting of numerous youth hunting events;
- Assistance in habitat and infrastructure improvement at state-managed waterfowl areas; and
- Participation on the Citizens Waterfowl Advisory Committee.
“The Michigan Duck Hunters Association has partnered with the Department of Natural Resources for many years and on many worthwhile projects,” said Director Creagh. “It’s because of relationships like these that we’re able to make such strides in stewardship of Michigan’s woods, water and wildlife.”
“We are proud to have been nominated by the staff of the Department of Natural Resources to receive this award,” Curtis said. “Our chapters work hand-in-hand with the Department of Natural Resources staff at every level to assure that Michigan’s unique natural resources are here for future generations.”
The Michigan Duck Hunters Association is an important partner in the Michigan Waterfowl Legacy (www.michigan.gov/mwl), with Curtis and one other MDHA member serving on the initiative’s steering committee. The Michigan Waterfowl Legacy – celebrating the “Year of the Duck” in 2012-2013 – is a 10-year, cooperative partnership to restore, conserve and celebrate Michigan’s waterfowl, wetlands and waterfowl hunting community.
Partners in Conservation Awards are made to individuals and organizations that have been nominated by DNR staffers for exemplary service to state conservation efforts.
