West End Health Foundation Spring 2019 Grant Cycle

Marquette, MI – The West End Health Foundation awarded the second cycle of 2018 grants to support health and wellness projects in Marquette County’s West End communities recently. A total of eleven proposals were received by the Foundation. Seven proposals were funded for a total of $30,385.
Grants were awarded to the following non-profit organizations Girls on the Run-scholarships for girls in the West End running and fitness program $2,100.

Great Lakes Recovery Center-to purchase materials to build a maple sugar shack to be used by youth participants $6,000.

Ishpeming Township-materials to build a FitCore Extreme Structures facility at the Ishpeming Township playground $10,000.

Lake Superior Life Care and Hospice-funding to improve West End volunteer recruitment and retention $4,025.

Room at the Inn-funding for the warming center services in Marquette $3,750.

Superior Shore Systems-funding to provide a Feeding America Mobile Food Truck in summer of 2019 $2,000.

UP Diabetes Outreach Network-support for the Produce for Diabetes Prevention Program $2,510.

In addition to these grants, MC Squared received $13,831 in proceeds from the West End Health Foundation Annual Golf Outing held at Wawonowin Country Club. The West End Health Foundation and MC Squared partnered on the event. All money raised was awarded to MC Squared to provide health-related programing for youth in Marquette County.

UP Children’s Therapy in partnership with Active Physical Training will provide sideline athletic trainers, concussion screening and injury evaluation for all high school athletes in the Ishpeming, Negaunee and NICE school districts during the 2018/2019 school year as a result of a $7,500 grant awarded to each of the three school districts by the West End Health Foundation.

The West End Health Foundation, formerly the Western Marquette County Health Foundation, was founded in 2014 as a result of the sale of Bell Hospital to LifePoint Hospitals. The mission of the West End Health Foundation is “Advancing health and wellness in the West End community”. The Foundation is a 501 c 3 organization. Priority funding areas are programs and services offered in the City of Ishpeming and Negaunee and the following Townships Champion, Ely, Humbolt, Ishpeming, Michigamme, Negaunee, Republic, Richmond and Tilden. Areas of concern are chronic disease education, diabetes, asthma, arthritis, cancer, heart disease, mental health, nutrition, social and emotional support, prenatal health, wellness, obesity, physical fitness, substance abuse and under-insured or uninsured individuals.

The West End Health Foundation opens applications for funding two times per year-Spring and Fall. Non-profit organizations with IRS nonprofit certification can apply for one project per funding cycle. The grant request for each cycle cannot exceed $10,000 per organization. In some cases, a multi-year proposal will be accepted, but generally, requests should relate to projects that can be completed within one calendar year.

The West End Health Foundation Spring Grant Cycle opened on March 1, 2019. Grant deadline is Monday, April 1, 2019 by 5:00 p.m. Grant application forms can be obtained by emailing Foundation Manager Pam Christensen at wmchfmanager@gmail.com or by calling (906) 204-7410 and requesting an application form.
