Marquette County Bar Association Celebrates Law Day June 1st with Volunteer Lawyers Available May 21st

Marquette County Bar Association Celebrates Law Day with Public Program hosted by Judge Karl Weber and Volunteer Attorneys Discuss Legal Issues and Resources.

Marquette, MI. The community is invited to join the Marquette County Bar Association as District Court Judge Karl Weber will discuss the court system, history of the Marquette County Courthouse, and the Miranda Warning. Judge Weber’s address will begin at 4:00 p.m. on June 1, 2016 at the Marquette County Circuit Courtroom. This is also a great opportunity for the community to view our beautiful courthouse known for being a filming location in the movie Anatomy of a Murder.

In addition to this program, volunteer lawyers will be available to talk with members of the public about their legal issues and provide information about various legal resources available in Marquette County. Volunteer lawyers will be available to the public on May 21, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Peter White Public Library and the Westwood Mall in Marquette.

About Law Day

Law Day is an annual commemoration first held in 1957 when American Bar Association President Charles Rhynes envisioned a special national day to mark our nation’s commitment to the rule of law. The following year, President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Law Day Proclamation. Law Day was made official in 1961 when Congress issued a joint resolution designating May 1 as the official date for celebrating Law Day.

In 2016, the nation marks the 50th anniversary of perhaps the nation’s best-known U.S. Supreme Court case, Miranda v. Arizona. The Miranda Warning, which was developed in response to this landmark ruling, apprises suspects being interrogated by police of their right to remain silent and their right to legal representation. As this year’s Law Day theme, bar associations across the nation have an opportunity to explore with their communities our criminal justice system and the importance of procedural fairness and equal justice under the law.
