MARQUETTE – If you’re attending the UP 200, the Jackpine 30 or the Midnight Run, you can watch the start or finish – but not the whole race. The only race spectators can see in its entirety is the Kiddie Mutt Race in downtown Marquette Saturday (Feb. 16th).
For over a decade the Marquette Kiwanis has been hosting the Kiddie Mutt Race, which, as you may guess from the title, is a race where kids and mutts race – although I’m sure many dog-owners wouldn’t refer to many of these dedicated canine companions as “mutts”.
Some of the “dog teams” whip down the 100 yard track – much to the shock of their adolescent musher. Others stage sit-in protests right at the starting gate (usually when the “kiddie” outweighs the “mutt”. And some dogs are large enough for the task, but prefer to casually stroll down the runway, smelling every wonderful scent along the route.
Well over 130 races took place this year – and if the happy faces are any indication – there will likely be that number and more next year at the Marquette Commons. Also, a note for either the dog or kidless people interested: people do participate without one or the other. It’s a match made for mushers.
