Point In Time Survey Press Release Reminder

Marquette, Michigan – Every January, more than 400 Continuums of Care (CoC) covering over 3,000 cities and counties across the nation will organize tens of thousands of volunteers in a national effort to measure the scale of homelessness in the United States. This count measure the number of homeless persons in shelters and on the streets at a single point-in-time. The Point-in-Time (PIT) count for Marquette/Alger/Schoolcraft Counties will be conducted January 31, 2018 from 12:00am to 11:59pm. If you are homeless, please attend a local community lunch in your area on Wednesday the 31st to be included in our local efforts. Achieving an accurate count is essential for securing funding, support, and for agencies in developing a thoughtful response.

Locally, the effort is being coordinated by the Alger-Marquette-Schoolcraft Continuum of Care (CoC) and will involve over forty local agencies and law enforcement departments. Defining the extent of rural homelessness presents a significant challenge in that there are no formal homeless shelters excepting the City of Marquette’s Room at the Inn. “Couch Surfing” is the most common form of homelessness in our area. In those cases, the homeless person or family may not necessarily be connected with an agency. Those are the cases where help is needed. The CoC is aware someone knows the person or family in need and may be willing to help them be counted. Anyone interested in volunteering to assist on January 31st should contact Jason Parks of the CoC PIT Committee (906) 228-6522 ext. 236 by e-mail JParks@communityactionam.org.
