Marquette – CineArts Films at Peter White Public Library, a series devoted to foreign and independent films, will screen “Son of Saul” on Friday, January 13 at 6 p.m. in the Community Room of the Peter White Public Library.
“Son of Saul” is set in October 1944 at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Saul is a Hungarian member of the Sonderkammando, the group of Jewish prisoners forced to assist the Nazis. While working, Saul discovers the body of a boy he takes for his son. As the Sonderkommando plans a rebellion, Saul decides to carry out an impossible task: save the boy’s body, find a rabbi to recite Kaddish and offer the boy a proper burial.
The film will be introduced by Russ Thorburn of the NMU English Department. “Son of Saul” was released in 2015, is rated R, and runs for 107 minutes. It is in Hungarian with English subtitles.
