Marquette, Michigan – November 12, 2015 – The Michigan State Housing Development Authority awarded a $83,448 Community Development Block Grant to Marquette County and Houghton County that will help demolish four to five blighted residential structures.
“Maintaining the homes in a community is vital to the overall quality of that community,” said Kevin
Elsenheimer, executive director of MSHDA. “Investing in blight elimination improves property values
in the surrounding community.”
Funds will be used to demolish three blighted residential structures in Republic Township in Marquette County, and one to two blighted residential structures in the Village of Calumet in Houghton County.
MSHDA administers the federally-funded CDBG program through its Community Development division. CDBG funds are used by smaller communities and counties to upgrade homes owned by low-income residents and carry out other housing activities, such as residential blight elimination. Money also is used to fund neighborhood preservation programs, rental development and rehabilitation activities as well as down-payment assistance programs.
