MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN – Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys hosts a free screening of the foreign language film “Le Grand Voyage” on Monday, March 24 at 5:30 pm in the Peter White Public Library Community Room.
A few weeks before his college entrance exams, Réda, a young man who lives in the south of France, finds himself obligated to drive his father to Mecca. The wide cultural and generational gap between the two is worsened by their lack of communication. Réda finds it hard to accommodate his father, who demands respect for himself and his pilgrimage. From France, through Italy, Serbia, Turkey, Syria, Jordan to Saudi Arabia, the two embark on a road trip that will change their lives forever.
“Le Grand Voyage” was released in 2004 and named one of the top films of the decade by the London Times and is a multi-international film festival award winner. The film is presented in the original French and Arabic with English subtitles and runs for 108 minutes. Viewers are invited to bring a take out supper to enjoy during the film screening.
The Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys initiative is a scholar-led reading and discussion program designed to foster opportunities for informed community conversations to familiarize public audiences with the people and cultures of Muslims in this country and around the world.
The program series has been made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in cooperation with the American Library Association.
