MARQUETTE, MI – The Marquette City Band would like to invite you to our upcoming spring concert to be held on Sunday, April 26, 3:00pm at Reynolds Recital Hall at NMU. There is a suggested donation of $5 for this concert.
Entitled “An Old-Fashioned Sousa Concert – More Than Marches,” the program will offer a wide variety of band music listeners will be are sure to enjoy, Although John Philip Sousa is known worldwide as “The March King,” he also composed many other different types of music in his impressive career—including dances, novelty pieces, folk music suites and even operas. The Marquette City Band will present a concert reminiscent of what Sousa would have played with his own band as it traveled all across the U.S. and toured Europe a hundred years ago.
Two soloists will be featured on the concert. Carrie Biolo, an adjunct music instructor at NMU, will play “The Mockingbird Fantasia” on xylophone; and Jacob Barnby, a two-time winner of the NMU Music Department’s Performance Competition, will be performing “The Blue Bells of Scotland” on euphonium. Other music on the program will include “Orpheus in the Underworld Overture” by Offenbach, “Selections from Carmen” by Bizet, a “Fugue on Yankee Doodle”, as well as waltzes, popular songs, and of course, a few Sousa marches.
