DeTour State Harbor, located in Chippewa County’s DeTour Village, will close for the season on Wednesday, Sept. 5, for a significant upgrade project, the Department of Natural Resources said today.
The closure will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 4, when the fuel dock will close at 6 p.m. The harbor’s docks will be removed the following day, dredging will begin, and all facilities will be closed and winterized. Re-opening is anticipated in early July 2013.
“The upgrade project entails a complete overhaul of the harbor,” said harbor master Richard Rathke. “When Detour State Harbor reopens in summer of 2013, boaters can expect to enjoy a completely new harbor facility.”
The harbor improvement project is funded by the federal Sport Fish Restoration Fund and the Michigan State Waterways Fund. The State Waterways Fund is a restricted fund derived from the collection of boat registration fees, a portion of the Michigan marine fuel tax, and user fees. Waterways funding is dedicated to the acquisition, construction, operation and maintenance of recreational boating facilities.
