At Michigan Technological University in the frigid Upper Peninsula, snow and cold are facts of life–and Michigan Tech celebrates its winter weather every year with its iconic Winter Carnival. The festival officially kicks off tonight as students and community residents crowd the campus for the “All-nighter.”
Student groups will be building snow statues overnight while music blasts, broomball is played and traditional Winter Carnival foods are consumed, including chili and deep-fried Twinkies.
The 2015 Winter Carnival theme is While Frozen in the Ice and Snow, We Dream of Vacations on Which to Go.
For the past month, student and community groups have been building enormous snow statues–some of them 30 feet high. Those statues will be judged on Thursday morning.
The Winter Carnival tradition began in 1922 and has been run by the Blue Key National Honor Society since 1934. Michigan Tech’s Blue Key was honored nationally as top chapter this year, and its president, Andrew Conley, was named top president.
The weekend brings a two-game hockey series against Bemidji State, the Broomball Alumni Invitational and a Torchlight Parade with fireworks at Mont Ripley, Michigan Tech’s ski hill..
