City of Ishpeming Volunteer Fire Department

The City of Ishpeming Volunteer Fire Department was called to a residence at 626 W. Division Street for a structure fire at 12:29. Upon arrival most of the fire had already been extinguished to the single story home owned by Ray Holappa of Ishpeming.

Ishpeming DPW had been attempting to thaw the water line running to the home, electrical wiring in the attic over-heated causing a small fire to start in a near by roof support and insulation. DPW personnel alertly notice smoke coming from the homes outer wall and used a portable fire extinguisher to knock down the small fire.

There was only minor damage to the homes exterior wall and near by electrical wiring.

The Holappa’s are still without water, they hope to have a garden hose ran from a neighbors home to provide them with water soon.

This is the second time this winter Ishpeming DPW crews thawing water pipes have caused a minor structure fire. The procedure to thaw water pipes is very dangerous, even when things are done correctly, things like this can and do happen.

Seventeen Firefighters and 2 fire trucks responded, Firefighters were in scene for about 30 minutes no injuries were reported. Marquette County 131 was also Dispatched for support.
