New Technical Middle College Opening In Marquete Country

Champion, MI-January 19, 2015– Eagle Mine officials announced today a partnership with Marquette-Alger RESA, local school districts, and Northern Michigan University to offer an integrated high school and college program for students – Technical Middle College. The Middle College will provide high school students residing in Marquette and Alger Counties the opportunity to earn a high school diploma and an associate’s degree at no cost to the student.

While the primary source of funding for the Technical Middle College is provided by the State of Michigan, Eagle Mine’s commitment to the program is $250,000 over three years (2015 to 2017) with the intent to renew support of the Middle College through Eagle’s eight year mine life ending in 2022.

Students participating in the Technical Middle College must commit to a five-year program of study in either a Career and Technical Education or Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics career pathway.

The program offers students the opportunity to pursue an associate degree in six career areas: Clinical Sciences, Industrial Maintenance, Electrical Technology, Building Technology, Automotive Service Technology, and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

“This partnership makes a lot of sense for Eagle Mine,” said Chantae Lessard, manager of Corporate Social Responsibility. “We understand firsthand the need for technical skills in Marquette County. We want to make sure that our investment has a positive impact on not only the students but on the community’s regional economic growth.”
