Ecologist and Professor to Receive Conservation Science Award for Work in Michigan October 17th

Michigan Nature Association will honor Dr. Dennis Albert at October 17 ceremony in East Lansing

OKEMOS, Mich. – Dr. Dennis (Denny) Albert, landscape and wetland ecologist and assistant professor at Oregon State University, will receive the Edward G. Voss Conservation Science Award at the Michigan Nature Association(MNA)’s October 17 Volunteer and Donor Recognition Dinner.

Albert is being honored for his countless contributions to conservation in Michigan and the Great Lakes region through field surveys, natural features inventories, ecoregional mapping, and research into wetland ecology. His work has been used for conservation and restoration purposes. Throughout his career, Albert has helped educate the public on the importance of protecting Michigan’s natural heritage through books and articles written for a general audience.

“[Albert] has been instrumental in protecting more than 30 miles of Great Lakes shoreline and other environmentally-sensitive areas in Michigan,” said MNA Executive Director Garret Johnson. “We are pleased to recognize his commitment to protecting our state’s natural heritage.”

Albert’s research focus began with the development of a statewide ecoregional classification for Michigan, which expanded to a multi-state collaboration in the Midwest. He has a Ph.D. in forest ecology from the University of Michigan and, from 2006 to 2013, was a lecturer at the University of Michigan Biological Station. Albert was an adjunct professor in zoology and fisheries and wildlife at Michigan State University, where he also provided field training to students in identification of aquatic macrophytes. Prior experience includes field training for Michigan Department of Natural Resources staff, wetland and field training for the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality and work with the Michigan Natural Features Inventory as a senior research ecologist.

Presently, Albert is an assistant professor and senior researcher in the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University. He is working on implementing Great Lakes coastal monitoring in collaboration with nine universities, both American and Canadian, from the Great Lakes Region.

MNA’s Edward G. Voss Conservation Science Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the scientific understanding of Michigan’s biological diversity and its conservation. Dr. Edward G. Voss was an internationally-renowned scientist, dedicated educator and committed conservationist who spent his life working to protect Michigan’s natural heritage.

MNA’s annual celebration of volunteers and donors will be take place at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center in East Lansing on October 17 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $30 by contacting Danielle Cooke at 866-223-2231 or dcooke@michigannature.org. All are welcome to join the celebration, which will include jazz music from Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings and a silent auction to benefit MNA’s Environmental Education Action Fund.

Established in 1952, the Michigan Nature Association is a nonprofit conservation organization committed to the protection and maintenance of special natural areas throughout the state. Through stewardship, MNA works to protect the rare and endangered plants and animals that reside in these areas, and promote a program of natural history and conservation education. For more than 60 years, MNA has worked to acquire and protect more than 10,000 acres from the northern tip of the U.P. to the Indiana/Ohio border.
