Calendar – Education – Book Discussion of “Prince Among Slaves” – Sept. 24

Marquette – Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys invites the public to a book discussion of “Prince Among Slaves” by Terry Alford on Wednesday, September 24 at 1 p.m. in the Shiras Room of the Peter White Public Library.

In this remarkable work, Terry Alford tells the true story of Abd al Rahman Ibrahima, a Muslim slave who, in 1807, was recognized by an Irish ship’s surgeon as the son of an African king who had saved his life many years earlier. After spending 40 years in slavery, Rahman Ibrahima was freed in 1828 by order of President John Quincy Adams and Secretary of State Henry Clay after the Sultan of Morocco requested his release.

The Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys initiative is a scholar-led reading and discussion program designed to foster opportunities for informed community conversations to familiarize public audiences with the people and cultures of Muslims in this country and around the world. There is no charge to attend.
