June 24, 2014 — As a way to partially fund operations of the state’s rest areas and Welcome Centers, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is seeking proposals for an advertising and sponsorship program.
This week, MDOT issued a request for proposals from potential vendors interested in providing a comprehensive sponsorship and advertising program in Michigan’s 64 rest areas and 14 Welcome Centers. The program also will include a digital information system for travelers.
Sponsorship opportunities in the program could include services like Wi-Fi, litter pick up, landscaping/grounds and video displays. The program would not include snack and drink vending services at the facilities; vending at rest areas is handled exclusively by the Michigan Bureau of Services for Blind Persons Business Enterprise Program.
“Our rest areas and Welcome Centers provide a range of valuable services and conveniences to a wide variety of travelers,” said State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle. “This sponsorship program cannot address all transportation funding needs in Michigan, but it would help defray the expense of operating and maintaining these facilities. While policymakers explore a comprehensive funding solution, we’ll continue to look for innovative ways to support important services.”
A mandatory pre-bid meeting for prime vendors will be held on 9 a.m. July 10 at the Horatio S. Earle Learning Center, 7575 Crowner Dr., in Dimondale. Electronic proposals are due Aug. 11.
A five-year contract term with a selected vendor would begin this fall. The agreement could be extended in one-year increments for up to five additional years.
