Father Marquette Catholic School will have a new principal next year. Michael Hedges of Edina, Minn. has accepted the position and will move to Marquette with his family this summer.
Hedges has nine years of teaching experience and is currently a Social Studies teacher and a board member at Metro Tech Career Academy in Minneapolis. He attended Catholic schools from kindergarten through the 12th grade and has coached baseball at his high school alma mater. He said his experiences at Catholic schools have helped form him into the person he is today and will assist him in his new job at Father Marquette School.
“This position appeals to me due to the outstanding community of educators that helped shape me at Catholic schools throughout my life,” Hedges noted. “Their dedication and commitment to faith and desire to help each student reach their potential is a situation I would like to replicate as principal of Father Marquette. Catholic schools are tasked with educating students about the very things that define who we are as members of the Church. It is an important job and one that deserves someone who will work tirelessly to achieve it.”
Hedges holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Studies Education from Purdue University and a Master of Business Administration in Management and Marketing from Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. He is currently pursuing a K-12 Administration Degree from Purdue University.
Hedges feels that his past work experience will serve him well as he makes the transition to administration. “As a teacher, I have developed curriculum and individualized instruction. I have fostered the necessary relationships with my students and their families that allow the lines of communication to be open and honest,” he stressed.
“In the past few years, I have become a leader among the staff – having many opportunities to lead professional development sessions, organize and run our weekly professional learning community, and lead our University of Minnesota-backed initiative to increase the number of students bound for college. As a board member, I have had an opportunity to develop staff evaluations, manage the budget, and work with outside organizations for the betterment of our school,” Hedges explained.
Hedges’ wife, Valerie, is also an educator and will begin her position as a professor of Biology at NMU this fall. The couple has one daughter.
Michael Hedges was the unanimous selection of a nine-member committee that was composed of parents, school council members, teachers, clergy and the diocesan superintendent of schools. The committee screened 18 candidates after conducting a nation-wide search for a new principal.
