MARQUETTE, MICHIGAN – Readers Theater welcomes the public to join in a reading of “The Member of the Wedding” by Carson McCullers on Thursday, March 20 at 7:00pm in the Peter White Public Library Shiras Room.
Based on the 1946 novel by Southern writer Carson McCullers, the play tells the story of 12-year-old tomboy Frankie Addams, who feels disconnected from the world; in her words, an “unjoined person.” Her closest companions are the family’s African American maid, Berenice Sadie Brown, and her six-year-old cousin, John Henry West. She has no friends in her small Southern town and dreams of going away with her brother and his bride-to-be on their honeymoon in the Alaskan wilderness.
Adapted for the stage by the author in 1950 with a cast including Ethel Waters, Julie Harris, and debuted Brandon deWilde, a 7 year-old second grader.
In 1952 the film version of the play was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for Julie Harris, in her debut screen appearance.
McCullers was best known for writing The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter the novel that made her an overnight literary sensation.
Readers Theater is a group of adults, who are interested in drama and are willing and able to read a scripted role. They meet on the third Thursday of each month to read plays for enjoyment. New readers are always welcome.
