Marquette – “Houghton – the Birthplace of Professional Hockey”
will be presented by MTU professor Bill Sproule on Wednesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. at the Marquette Regional History Center, 145 W. Spring Street, Marquette.
Hockey may be Canada’s game, but a Houghton dentist and an entrepreneur became promoters for hockey’s first professional league. The International Hockey League lasted three years (1904-1907) but during its run, some of the best players of that era represented teams from Houghton, Calumet, Sault Ste. Marie (Michigan), Sault Ste. Marie (Ontario), and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the league. This presentation will explore the teams and famous players, as well as how this league was founded.
A $5 suggested donation will be asked at the door. Please visit www.marquettehistory.org or call 226-3571 for more information.
