HOUGHTON, MI – Michigan Technological University sends approximately 100 students to more than 40 countries each year through its Study Abroad programs. More and more faculty are leading groups of students to places like Estonia and Cumbria.
Students earn credit for their studies abroad. “This is a Michigan Tech program, taught by Michigan Tech faculty, with regular Michigan Tech classes, so for the students it is a seamless educational experience,” said Carl Blair, a lecturer in Social Sciences who has taken students on four “Frontiers and Fortresses” trips to Cumbria, in England. “We live in a global society, and we have a global campus,” he explained. “It’s a two-way street, and you can’t just expect the world to come to you. Going out and learning how to negotiate with the world, experiencing the world, is a very important part of any person’s education.”
Marika Seigel, associate professor of Humanities at Michigan Tech, took another group of students to study professional communications in Estonia, a small country on the Baltic Sea.
