Natural Resources Commission to meet Thursday in Lansing

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission (NRC) will hold its regular monthly meeting on Thursday, Sept. 12, at the MSU Diagnostic Center for Population and Animal Health, 4125 Beaumont Road, in Lansing.

The day begins at 9 a.m. with a meeting of the NRC Policy Committee on Finance and Administration. The committee will preview the Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) 2014 fiscal year budget, review financial reporting formats, review the department’s performance scorecard, and hear about the start of the Wildlife Division audit.

At 10 a.m., the Marketing and Outreach Advisory Committee will review results of Pure Michigan’s fishing campaign and overall outdoor recreation promotional efforts, discuss the Wildlife Division’s video and Web work , receive reports on the Youth Conservation Council and Sportsmen Against Hunger campaign, and recap recent Demo Days events.

At 1 p.m., the Policy Committee on Wildlife and Fisheries will hear reports from the Fisheries and Wildlife divisions, review fisheries orders, and discuss multi-year proposals for both divisions.

The Committee of the Whole follows at 2:30 p.m. with a report from DNR Director Keith Creagh, as well as a legislative report.

At 4 p.m., the St. Clair-Detroit River Sturgeon for Tomorrow chapter and the Clinton River Watershed Council will each receive a Partners in Conservation Award.

At 4:15 p.m., Law Enforcement Division will present Lifesaving Awards to conservation officers Jeff Rabbers and Patrick MacManus.

At 4:30 p.m., Safari Club International will make presentations to its survey winners.

Immediately following the awards presentations, the NRC will hear comments from the public. Those wishing to make public comments before the NRC should contact Deb Whipple, executive assistant to the NRC, at 517-373-2352 or whippled1@michigan.gov to register.

Following public comments, the NRC is scheduled to consider:

Use of bait by deer hunters in Iosco County;
Adoption of fisheries orders for cool-water species both statewide and on selected waters; and
Hook-and-line restrictions on various waters during the walleye spawning season.

There are several items scheduled for director’s action, including the sale of easements across state-managed land in Cheboygan County and 12 land transactions.
