Sixth Graders Prepare to Release Baby Salmon

(Marquette, MI) – The Fred Waara Chapter of Trout Unlimited (FWCTU), headquartered in Marquette, initiated the Salmon in the Classroom (SIC) program more than a decade ago. Through the SIC program, FWCTU provides funding and support for the set-up of 5 aquariums in schools throughout the central U.P. Each year the aquariums are supplied with 200 salmon eggs in late November, provided by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and they hatch in January. Teachers and students raise the salmon until early May when they take a field trip to a local salmon habitat and release the fish into the stream. During the winter period, the teachers incorporate the salmon into many of their lesson plans such as environment, fish habitat, conservation, and water quality.

FWCTU volunteers will assist the teachers and students of Mid-Peninsula School as they release their salmon into the Escanaba River at 9:00 AM Friday, May 3rd at Pioneer Park near the mouth of the river. After the fish release, the FWCTU chapter members will assist the students in macro-invertebrate (bug) collection and identification.

The following fish releases will all take place at the Dead River below Tourist Park Dam:

· Tuesday, April 30, Superior Central Schools release at 8:45AM
· Thursday, May 2, Negaunee Middle School release at 11:30AM
· Friday, May 3, Gwinn Middle School in the morning (time to be determined)
