Marquette, Michigan -Father Roy Bourgois, founder of the “School of the Americas Watch,” will speak at 7:00 p.m. on April 24 in the University Center’s Marquette Room at Northern Michigan University.
Bourgois will speak on Thursday, April 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Peter White Public Library’s Community Room.

Fr. Roy Bourgois founded the “School of the Americas Watch” in 1990 to expose US foreign policy in Latin America. The School of the Americas, located at Ft. Benning, Georgia, trains soldiers from Latin America in combat skills and is funded by US taxpayer dollars. A yearly vigil at the gates of Ft. Benning has drawn international attention to the atrocities committed by graduates from this school.
For the past few years Fr. Roy has traveled to Latin America to meet with Presidents and officials asking them to withdraw their troops from the School. Fr. Roy was invited to the White House last fall.
In 2008 Fr. Roy participated in a woman’s ordination to priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church. On October 4, 2012, the Vatican officially dismissed him from the priesthood, and from the Maryknoll Order, which he had served for 45 years. Although threatened with excommunication, Fr. Roy continues to speak at universities, conferences, and churches voicing his opposition to the School of the Americas and his support of women’s ordination.
