The Michigan Department of Human Services is correcting an issue involving payment of monthly subsidies to some parents of adopted children.
Last year, DHS began sending notices to more than 27,000 adoptive parents, notifying them of an upcoming change in computer systems at the end of the calendar year. That change necessitated that parents register updated addresses and tax information with the department. Despite at least three notices being sent to all adoptive parents, some still had not registered with the Michigan Administrative Information Network (MAIN) system as of Jan. 7, when the latest round of checks were processed.
Anyone who did not complete the registration process with a correct address did not receive a subsidy payment.
DHS has staff working overtime and is committed to help correct the issue fast and facilitate these subsidy payments. However, adoptive parents still must register in the new system.
Its easy to do, and there are two ways to do it:
ONLINE: Visit mi.gov/cpexpress to register, a very quick and easy process. Once accepted and completed, families can expect payment in approximately one week.
FAX: Fill out a W-9 form, available through www.irs.com and fax it to 517-373-0297.
If clients still have questions about how to proceed, and to ensure they have been correctly registered into the new system, they can call staff dedicated to handling this issue at 517-373-7476 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday
