NMU Hosts Virtual Constitution Day Event Thursday September 17, 2020

The Northern Michigan University Political Science Department will mark Constitution Day with a virtual presentation at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17. Chair Carter Wilson and Professor Ruth Watry will discuss the U.S. Constitution and the republic it created, along with the types of actions that weaken or strengthen democratic republics.

The event description indicates that, just after signing the U.S. Constitution, Benjamin Franklin was approached by a woman who asked him what type of government was established by the document. Franklin replied, “A republic, madam, if you can keep it.”
