Fill in the Blank: Chitinophaga Is to Green Bay as [Blank] Is to Singapore

Houghton, Michigan – Cultures from the water trapped in the bottoms of boats reveal the invisible microbial communities that could identify one port from another. And one microbiologist is setting off for 22 port cities around the world to identify some.

Steve Techtmann, a microbiologist at Michigan Tech, earned a Young Faculty Award from DARPA to study the microbial biosignatures and will be traveling to do fieldwork all summer and fall. He’s already figured out some for the Great Lakes: Chitinophaga bacteria are unique to Green Bay; Rhodovastum in Duluth; Sandarakinorhabdus in the Keweenaw Waterway.

To learn more about the science behind this, check out the full story at Michigan Tech news. And feel free to reach out to Steve directly (smtechtm@mtu.edu, 906-487-3250); he’d be happy to share updates and photos during his travel. I’ve attached a couple from his lab, just credit Sarah Bird/Michigan Tech if you use them, please.
