WWI Symposium at NMU Thursday – 4/6/17

Marquette, MIApril 5, 2017 – The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at Northern Michigan University will host a symposium with several presentations commemorating the 100th anniversary of the United States entering World War I. The event will take place Thursday, April 6, in the Marquette Room of the University Center. Faculty members from NMU and Gogebic Community College will share their research.

The schedule of speakers and topics is:

“Battle of Armistice Day” by Daniel Truckey, Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center, 9 a.m.

“Michigan State Constabulary in the Upper Peninsula, 1917-1919” by Russell Magnaghi, professor emeritus at NMU, 9:45 a.m.

“Conflicted Loyalties: Austro-Hungarian Immigrants in Michigan and the Great War” by Robbie Goodrich, history professor at NMU, 10:30 a.m.

“Peace in Retrospect: Harold Nicolson, the League of Nations and the Modern Diplomat” by Caroline Krzakowski, assistant English professor at NMU, 11:15 a.m.

“Gogebic County During WWI” by Dan Obradovich, history professor at Gogebic Community College, 1 p.m.

“From the U.P. to the Western Front, the 32nd Division in the Great War” by John Moschetti, instructor of military science at NMU, 1:45 p.m.

“Music in a Soldier’s Life: How Each Affected the Other” by Jim Strain, percussion professor at NMU, 2:30 p.m.

This event is part of the Marquette County “WWI Remembered” commemoration, which is funded by a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council. For more information, contact the Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center at 227-3212 or heritage@nmu.edu.
