MARQUETTE, Mich. — The presidential candidate visit by Cynthia Pemberton, one of four finalists for Northern Michigan University’s presidency, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 15. She will make a presentation in a public forum at 4 p.m. that day in the Peter White Lounge of the University Center.
Pemberton, the provost and vice president for academic affairs and professor of education at Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D., was originally scheduled to visit the NMU campus on April 1, but encountered weather-related issues due to a blizzard in the Dakotas at the time of her travel.
Prior to her time at Dickinson State University in Dickinson, N.D., Pemberton previously served in an administrative capacity in the graduate school at Idaho State University and was on the faculty of ISU’s sport science, physical education and dance department before being promoted to professor of educational leadership. She holds an Ed.D. in educational leadership-postsecondary education/administration from Portland State University, a master’s in interdisciplinary studies—physical education, psychology and nutrition—from Southern Oregon State College and a bachelor’s in biology/psychology from Willamette University in Salem, Ore.
The other three candidates include Robert Ackerman, professor of law and former dean at the Wayne State University Law School in Detroit, visiting campus Thursday, April 3; Fritz Erickson, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Ferris State University in Big Rapids, at NMU Tuesday, April 8; and Greg Cant, founding dean of the Offutt School of Business and Robert J. Johnson chair in economics and business administration at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., in Marquette Thursday, April 10.
Each of the candidates will make a 5-7 minute presentation at a public forum held at 4 p.m. in the University Center on the day of their visit. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.
The day after each candidate’s visit, members of the NMU Board of Trustees will hold a public feedback session where students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members can share their thoughts on any of the candidates. The first feedback session will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 4 in the Peter White Lounge of the University Center.
NMU President David Haynes’ two-year term runs through June 30. He announced in December that he will return to the NMU faculty at that time. The hope is to have his successor in place by July 1.
