Maple Sugarbush Boil Scheduled for Saturday – 4/1/2017

Alberta, MIMarch 31, 2017 – Every spring for three years, Michigan Tech’s School of Forest Resources and Environmental Science’s “Maple Syrup Management and Culture” class has tapped maple trees in the university’s research forest in Alberta, Michigan. This year approximately 70 trees have been tapped, and this Saturday, April 1, the first boil or “sugarbush” is scheduled.

The sugarbush will start at 7 a.m. Saturday and continue until dark.  Tara Bal, who teaches the Maple Syrup Management class, and her assistant,  Kaydi, will be at the “sugarhouse” in Alberta.  It is a small pavillion behind the dorms and kitchen at Alberta Village.  Tara’s instructions:  “When you get to Alberta, pull into the village and stay on the roads to the left. They go  to a parking lot where you can park. Then the shack is straight ahead with steam pouring out from under the roof.”

Cell service is poor in Alberta, but you can try Tara at 906-281-6241 or Kaydi at 616-498-7552.
