Calendar -Outdoors – Upper Peninsula Pastured Livestock Tour – Sept. 10

Chatham – The Upper Peninsula Pastured Livestock Tour will be held on Saturday, September 10 starting at 1 p.m. at the Michigan State University Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center South Farm, E3774 University Drive in Chatham.

This event is free for anyone that is interested in or are raising livestock on pasture either commercially or for home consumption. Don’t miss out on the educational opportunity as seats are limited.

Highlights include:
Log Cabin Livestock with Ben and Denise Bartlett: beef and sheep grazing system utilizing holistic management principles to maximize production efficiency, evaluate your pastures, manage your grazing, environmental stewardship, heard health and on-farm profit.

Upper Peninsula Research and Extension Center with Paul Naasz: a hay ride tour of the research station featuring a grass fed and finished beef system focusing on integration of cropping and livestock systems while supporting soil health along with watering systems.

Satchell Farm tour: Erin and Michelle Satchell will share their experiences in raising pigs on their small-scale, diversified farm. Topics will include facilities and fencing, maintaining a small breeding herd, seasonal open-pen farrowing, pasture rearing, using locally available feeds, and direct marketing pork.

Transportation for the tour will be provided and DeBacker Family Dairy ice cream and refreshments will be served during the tour sponsored by Hiawathaland Farm Bureau and the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program.

The tour is free, but registration is required. Please submit a registration for each individual that is participating. This will ensure the most accurate count for transportation and refreshments. To register go to http://www.events.anr.msu.edu/PasturedLivestockTour/ .
