Ishpeming, Michigan – November 10, 2015 – The Western Marquette County Health Foundation (WMCHF) awarded fall grant cycle recipients with checks on Thursday, November 5th at its office in Ishpeming. The following organizations received grants for their programming:
- Area Health Education Center (AHEC) was awarded $7,500 for West End Dental Day. With Dental Day, AHEC brings the skills of volunteer oral health professionals to provide free dental services to adults who have an income of up to 250% of the poverty line
- Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Marquette County received $7,000 for its program, DudePower West, which helps provide specialized services to young males in Western Maruqette County through community based mentoring and a lunch buddy program
- Partirdge Creek Farm was given $7,500 for its expansion to create a second, larger food production facility in West Ishpeming, based on the successes of the Partridge Creek Farm/Grace Community Garden
- Teaching Family Homes accepted a check for $2,000 for the development of a high ropes course on its campus to provide educational, recreational, and developmental community health programs for clients and community members.
The Western Marquette County Health Foundation prioritizes funding based on programs that serve individuals in a specific geographic area, which is defined as two cities, Ishpeming and Negaunee, and nine townships: Ishpeming, Negaunee, Ely, Republic, Michigamme, Tilden, Champion, Humboldt, and Richmond.
Since its transition from the Bell Hospital Foundation (July 2014), the WMCHF has approved funding for approximately $175,000 to nonprofits through grants and donations. The next grant deadline is April 1, 2016.
