Ishpeming High School to Host Financial Reality Fair – Oct. 22

Ishpeming, MichiganOctober 20, 2015 – Ishpeming High School (IHS) is hosting an inaugural Financial Reality Fair on Thursday, October 22nd from 8AM-2:30PM in the IHS auditorium and new gym. Over100 students from Westwood High School and Negaunee High School will be in attendance in the morning followed by IHS Junior and Senior classes in the afternoon.

But what is a Financial Reality Fair? It is a hands-on learning event that allows students to simulate living on their own for a month in the real world. Students discover for themselves how their choices will affect their financial future as they make spending decisions while balancing a budget. Students are provided with a job, a starting salary, a credit score and even student loans. They then visit booths to “purchase” the goods and services they need to live on their own, such as food, transportation, leisure costs, clothing, furniture and housing. These booths are staffed by community volunteers. There’s even a booth for the surprises that life throws at you, both good and bad-from a flat tire to a cash gift from a family member!

Financial Reality Fairs in Michigan have been most successful with the joint participation of community businesses and volunteers. This is the second fair of its kind in the Upper Peninsula.

You are invited to participate in our area’s first Financial Reality Fair. TruNorth needs volunteers to work at its booths. (You’ll even get a FREE volunteer t-shirt and lunch!) The commitment is from 8AM to approximately 2:30PM, with an hour for lunch. You will also find that your participation will bring unexpected rewards. As young people in the community gain confidence in the pursuit of financial wellness, they will then be better equipped to support our local economy and the future of our local businesses.

Please contact Shae Kangas, TruNorth’s Member Advocate, at skangas@thecu.net or (906) 485-1210 ext. 226 to discuss your involvement in this event.
