Negaunee, Michigan – Inland lakes are places where family and friends gather to enjoy each other and the recreational opportunities that abound. Memories created during these times inspire a generation to share the experience with the next.
Waterfront property owners, other citizens, and all communities benefit socially and economically from healthy lake ecosystems. With over 11,000 inland lakes and more than 1,850 units of government in Michigan, it is evident that all local governments play a role in protecting the state’s waters.
MSU Extension is conducting a workshop in two UP locations intended to help local officials and citizens understand the benefits of inland lakes to communities, the regulations that govern inland lakes, and the opportunities that exist for protecting them at the local level.
The program includes two parts:
Part 1: Planning and zoning refresher: Applying best practices for watershed protection requires an excellent working knowledge of basic planning and zoning laws and their application. This session will highlight basic planning and zoning enabling legislation, master planning, zoning practice and recent legislative changes.
Part 2: Best planning and zoning practices for watershed protection: This session will introduce specific planning and zoning techniques to promote economic development while protecting water quality. The second part builds on the first, so participants should attend both dates.
Workshop participants will receive an early draft of the new resource “Protecting Michigan’s Inland Lakes: A Guide for Local Governments”.
The workshop will be conducted in Manistique on September 15 (Part 1) and September 22 (Part 2) and in Iron River September 17 (Part 1) and 24 (Part 2). All sessions run 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. (local time).
More information and online registration is available at http://events.anr.msu.edu/ShorelineZoning or by calling (906) 475-5731. Early registration (before September 1) is $55 ($75 thereafter).
