MARQUETTE, MI – Historian and author, Mikel B. Classen celebrates the release of his new book, “Teddy Roosevelt and the Marquette Libel Trial” with a presentation on Monday, April 20 at 7:00pm in the Peter White Public Library Shiras room.
On the same day Theodore Roosevelt survived an assassination attempt, he read a newspaper editorial from the Iron Ore, an Ishpeming, MI daily. Its publisher, George Newett, accused Roosevelt of being “drunk.” Tired of having his boisterous personality equated with intoxication, Roosevelt sued the paper for libel. As the 1913 case convened, admirals, statesmen and fellow explorers descended on Marquette to testify to Roosevelt’s unimpeachable personal character in the biggest libel trial of the early 20th century.
Mikel B. Classen has written about northern Michigan for over 35 years. A journalist, historian, and photographer, Classen lives in Sault Ste. Marie and collects of out-of-print history books, historical photographs and prints of the U.P. Learn more about him at www.mikelclassen.com.
A book sale & signing follows the presentation which is open to the public at no admission charge. For more information call the library at 226-4318 or visit www.pwpl.info.
