Meet Anthropologist Barbara Rylko-Bauer Monday, April 13th

MI Notable Book Author of “A Polish Doctor in the Nazi Camps”

Meet anthropologist Barbara Rylko-Bauer, author of “A Polish Doctor in the Nazi Camps” for a presentation entitled, Writing My Mother’s Story, on Monday, April 13 at 7:00pm in the Peter White Public Library Shiras room.

Rylko-Bauer interweaves personal family narrative with history to relate, from a daughter’s viewpoint, her Polish Catholic mother’s World War II experiences as a prisoner-doctor in Jewish slave labor camps in Nazi Germany. Jadwiga Lenartowicz Rylko, was training to be a pediatrician in Poland when the war began. Arrested early in 1944, she endured three concentration camps and a 42-day death march. After the war, the challenges of “surviving survival” entailed rebuilding a new life as a refugee doctor in Germany, and then, after 1950, as a U.S. immigrant in Detroit and later in Grand Rapids, MI.

Barbara Rylko-Bauer is a medical anthropologist whose writing focuses on health care inequalities, applied anthropology, political violence, the Holocaust, and memory. She grew up in Detroit, attended the University of Michigan, and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky. Currently, she is Adjunct Associate Professor of Anthropology at Michigan State University. She is also the author of Global Health in Times of Violence (2009), and lives in Grand Rapids.

The book was recently named one of the 2015 Michigan Notable Books, one of 20 books chosen by the Library of Michigan that speaks to our rich cultural, historical, and literary heritage proving that some of the greatest stories are found in the Great Lakes State.

A book sale & signing follows the presentation which is open to the public at no admission charge. For more information call the library at 226-4318 or visit www.pwpl.info.
