Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council donates $7,000 to Jacobetti Home for Veterans

Money to go toward recreational outings, members’ assistance

MARQUETTE, Mich. – A $7,000 donation presented today by the Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council will help fund the good works of the Dominic J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, said Home Administrator Brad Slagle.

“We’re very pleased with this donation,” Slagle said. “There are a number of ways we can put this generous contribution to work, and we’re most appreciative for the opportunity. Part of the donation may go toward our members’ assistance fund for needs like dentures, eyeglasses and hearing aids, or it may be put toward recreational activities like trips to Northern Michigan University hockey games or to the museum. We will certainly put this money to good use to improve our members’ quality of life.”

The Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council, which represents about 100,000 unionized construction workers statewide, raised the $7,000 during a 2014 golf outing. The council plans to make a matching donation to the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans later this year.

“Supporting military veterans has been close to the hearts of the building trades unions for years,” said Mike Thibault, business representative for the Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council in the Upper Peninsula. “So many of our own members in the trades have come out of the military, and our national building trades are deeply involved in the Helmets to Hardhats program, which helps veterans leaving the military transition into construction jobs. The Jacobetti Home has done tremendous work for veterans in our community, and we’re proud to be in a position to help them in this way.”

The Jacobetti Home provides skilled nursing and medical care to military veterans in a home-like environment in addition to domiciliary care and an after-care program for those recovering from substance abuse. The facility provides an in-house pharmacy, rehabilitation therapy, pastoral care and specialty clinics. It also provides opportunities for veterans to participate in spiritual, social, recreational and educational activities onsite and in the surrounding communities.
