Marquette, Michigan – The Building Hope in Uncertain Times series continues with “An Evening with Lady Day” a concert honoring the music of Billie Holiday featuring vocalist Kirsten Gustafson accompanied by Dave Ziegner on the bass and Phil Lynch at the piano on Thursday, February 11 at 7:00 pm in the Peter White Public Library’s Community room.
Holiday was nicknamed ‘Lady Day’ and had a seminal influence on jazz music and pop singing. Her vocal style pioneered a new way of manipulating phrasing and tempo. Holiday’s song “Crazy He Calls Me” contains the lyric “the impossible will take a little while” which is the title of the book the Building Hope program series is centered on.
A jazz vocalist, Kirsten Gustafson hails from Newberry, went on to perform and record in Chicago for several years and also had a chance to sing at the prestigious Montreaux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Eventually, she returned home to the Upper Peninsula where she partnered with Dave Ziegner, whom she had met earlier in Chicago.
Bassist Dave Ziegner grew up in Chicago and Detroit, came to Marquette as a young adult, and later moved to San Francisco. Now a local music instructor, Ziegner plays a variety of instruments and is part of a number of groups including Conga Se Menne, Dave & Derrell and Slave to Gravity. Gustafson and Ziegner have collaborated on a recording titled “So Many Stars.”
Pianist Phil Lynch is a gifted composer and jazz pianist, who also teaches psychology, government and economics at Escanaba High School. He is the author of the book “Live Like Louis – Lessons for Life from the Life and Music of Louis Armstrong.”
The Building Hope program series is based Paul Rogat Loeb’s inspiring collection of essays The Impossible Will Take a Little While: Perseverance and Hope in Troubled Times, which includes poetry in each chapter. The program series offers a variety of events to encourage and work toward positive change within our community.
There is no admission charge to the event thanks to sponsorship by the Marquette County Community Foundation, PWPL Friends and Carroll Paul Memorial Trust Fund of the Peter White Public Library, and the Emerick Family Fund of the Marquette County Community Foundation.
