Local Schools Join in Empty Bowls Fundraiser

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Marquette Empty Bowls, a fundraiser to help alleviate hunger and poverty, will be held from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 20, at the Marquette Alternative High School gymnasium. A meal of soup and bread will be served in ceramic bowls made by students from Northern Michigan University’s Ceramics Collective, Marquette Alternative High School, Marquette Senior High School and North Star Academy. Guests are invited to keep the bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world.  There will also be musical entertainment and a silent auction with merchandise and gift cards from local businesses.

The cost is $10 for NMU students, $14 for the general public and $8 for youth ages 18 and under. Tickets can be purchased by visiting mqtemptybowls.eventbrite.com. All proceeds benefit two causes: Project Aoy (Rice Paddy owner), which provides rice for families in Thailand; and Freedom From Hunger, an international nonprofit that promotes sustainable self-help solutions in the fight against chronic hunger and poverty. The local effort is modeled after the international Empty Bowls grassroots organization.

The Marquette Empty Bowls project was initiated by NMU ceramics student Katie Miller. Marquette Ending Hunger is also involved in the effort. For more information, contact Miller at katmill@nmu.edu.
